Our facility is located at 1398 Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington, MA and  patients must book an appointment online before testing.

What is Rapid Coronavirus Testing? How does it work?

A Rapid COVID-19 test is a molecular test that can quickly detect the presence of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Rapid COVID testing uses a swab like a standard diagnostic test, which is then inserted into a Fluorescent Immunoassay (FIA) scan to detect the presence of COVID-19.

Rapid tests with an FIA can bring back patient results on the same day of testing and with high levels of accuracy. It is also important to know that a rapid test is far different than an antibody test: an antibody test determines if a patient with a previous COVID-19 infection developed antibodies that fight off the virus. The rapid test determines if a patient currently has COVID-19.

Rapid COVID-19 Tests & Urgent Care

AFC Urgent Care Arlington uses Abbott ID NOW industry standard testing to ensure that all patients are getting the best possible care. Recent Abbott findings indicate that an urgent care center may be the best option for getting a COVID-19 test:

  • Multi-Site Urgent Care. In a completed analysis from a multi-site urgent care clinical setting of 430 symptomatic patients with two or more symptoms, including 53 PCR positive subjects, ID NOW demonstrated performance of 96.2% in positive agreement (sensitivity) and 99.5% negative agreement (specificity) compared to lab-based molecular PCR tests.
